Couple seeks to impact Seaford community through service

SEAFORD, Del. – A couple at the Salvation Army Sussex Chapel in Seaford are using their cultural differences to bring communities together.

The two are pastors at the Sussex Chapel.

“In the Salvation Army we say meet human needs without discrimination just being open to coming along side each other even if there’s ethnical differences or different religions, just coming alongside each other,” said Lt. Kathryn Alban Guerrero.

The two offer all sorts of services like a food pantry and fellowship as well as a soup kitchen for hundreds of people in need. Lt. Miguel Alban Guerrero said there is a large population of Latinos who are also looking for support in the community and Miguel said, he gets it.

“I can relate to them in a much personal way in which I can understand their struggles and that it’s not easy to leave everything back home to a whole new country,” said Miguel.

But, he adds volunteers are running out of space because of this significant need. On top of that they hope provide more facilities to the community in the future.

“By adding different days it’s going to require more food, all types of different resources and if we don’t get volunteers sometimes it requires us to hire people,” said Miguel.

The couple will expand some of their services like the soup kitchen on March 1. Miguel said he is also looking to provide more facilities like a basketball court for kids in the area.
