Couple married for 72 years gives love advice
FENWICK ISLAND, Del. – Love is definitely in the air and for one Delaware couple, it has been for nearly a century.
John and Jacqueline Roman have been married for over 70 years and they may have this marriage thing figured out. They help finish each others sentences, enjoy eating at their favorite restaurant, and enjoy showing a little PDA every now and then.
They met nearly a century ago. It was 1945 near the end of World War II. John was a U.S. soldier stationed in a small town in France. A soldier who asked a lovely French woman from that same small town to dance.
“I asked her and finally we’ll what she told me later her sister told her to dance with him and get it over with.”
A few months later they tied the knot.
John says, “War is hell but look what happened, I met my wife.”
It was love at first sight, well that’s depending on who you ask. But whether it was love at first sight or not, that was it for Jacqueline and John.
She says, “When we got married that was for life.”
But being married for over 70 years, raising six children, and having careers of their own has been no walk in the park.
“We had a lot of ups and a few downs.”
Some might say they figured out how to do this thing called marriage.
“When we start arguing or something I guess we just sat down for awhile and cooled off and that was it.”
And for those still trying to tackle a happy marriage, well here’s what John has to say, “If you don’t agree with her, keep your mouth shut and get out of the room. I don’t do it I say but…”
