Bill introduced to prevent seismic surveying in the Atlantic

Federal legislation could be the answer to stopping seismic air gun testing off the coast of Ocean City.

The Ocean City Chamber of Commerce announced support of the Atlantic Coastal Economies Protection Act.

If passed, this bill would prohibit air gun testing in the Atlantic, a precursor to offshore oil and gas exploration, which is something environmentalists say presents a direct threat to the coastal fishing and tourism.

Melanie Pursel, the President and CEO of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce said, “We’re really in support of any opposition if that makes sense, the Chamber has come out opposed to seismic testing and offshore drilling from the get go.”

We’re told this bill has been endorsed by a variety of stakeholders ranging from fisheries organizations to conservation and environmental groups.
