Tips for driving on slippery roads

On Monday, the sun melted away most of the remaining snow off the roads, but on Monday night, drivers were presented with a new problem.

The melted snow left huge puddles of water in the street in certain areas, and due to the freezing temperatures, some of those puddles turned to ice, presenting dangerous driving conditions.

47ABC spoke with local experts to learn how you can stay safe while driving on those slippery roads.

First, we’re told four wheel drive isn’t guaranteed to keep you safe. Even if you have a four wheel drive, you should still take it slow because your tires can still lose grip, especially on icy roads. Next, don’t speed. It will be harder for you to regain control of your car if you are driving at a high rate of speed. On top of that, don’t make any sudden movements, and don’t overcorrect if you start to lose control of your car.

Allen Kress, the Service Manager At Delaware Tire in Salisbury said, “I think the thing people do the most is they panic. You don’t want to get on the brake too fast. You don’t want to get on the gas too fast because you’re shifting the weight of the vehicle around and that’s when things get out of control, so just slow everything down. If you see turns, make sure you’re not traveling too fast for the turns and try not to slam on your brakes.”

Overall, the best thing you can do when there is ice on the ground, is to stay inside and avoid driving if you can.
