SBY Police plunge for Special Olympics

SANDY POINT STATE PARK, Md –  Salisbury Police Department and their explorer unit braced the cold to plunge into the Chesapeake Bay Friday, all to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland.

“It was extremely successful you know we had law enforcement representatives from all across the state come together to support our 7,782 special Maryland athletes. They raised over 200,000 all by jumping into the freezing waters of the Chesapeake Bay,” said Jim Schmutz, president and CEO of Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD).

The event is just one of the many Salisbury Police participate in to benefit SOMD.

“At this point, it’s not even a choice. We just do this because we love it. We love being part of the community. We love giving back to the community and the joy you see on everybody’s face, that makes it worth it,” said Det. Jason Caputo.

The Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point Beach will have rolling plunges on the hour for the public starting Saturday at 12pm and going until 5pm. Those interested can sign up here or register in person at the event.
