Salisbury police experience major data breach, working with FBI

SALISBURY, Md. – Officials with the Salisbury Police department were fighting off their own pirate last week after they discovered a data breach in their computers. Officials say they noticed there was a crypto-ransom ware virus on their computers back on January 9th and realized that someone had gotten into some of their important files. They say over the next couple of days IT officials worked around the clock to get rid of the virus by disconnecting and shutting down all servers to mitigate any potential threat. They add that thanks to the quick action of their computer experts, they were able to resolve the problem within the next couple of days.

“Everything is done at this point except for a few computers, all of the servers t hat are in major workstations and critical stuff was back up in about two days. All the kind of subsequent stuff that aren’t really critical but are still used on a regular basis I think were back up by the 14th,” said director of  information services Bill Garrett.

Officials add that they’re still tweaking a few more computers, and that they are currently working with the FBI. But they add that there is no threat to the public or the security at this time.
