Police arrest homeless sex offender on attempted rape and burglary charges
GEORGETOWN, Del. – Georgetown Police say they have wrapped up their investigation of an attempted sexual assault incident that took place back in October.
Officers from the Georgetown Police Department were called to an address on Albany Avenue during the early morning hours of October 20th, 2018, for an attempted rape incident. It was then learned that a 19-year-old female was asleep in her home when an unknown male entered her bedroom, got into her bed, and held his hand over her mouth. The victim was able to free herself and began to scream, leading the suspect to flee from the home.
Through evidence collected at the scene and further investigation, police identified Lewis Brittingham as a person of interest in the case. It was noted that Brittingam’s name was flagged in the Delaware Criminal Justice Information System.
On January 16th, the Newark Police Department was alerted to a suspicious person on someone’s apartment balcony in the 200 block of Main Street. Police were able to identify the suspicious person as Lewis Brittingham, and immediately took him into custody.
Brittingham was charged with attempted second degree rape and second degree burglary. He is currently being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Center on $26,000 secured bond.
