Local organization steps up to help coast guard during government shutdown
LEWES, Del. – As we begin to enter day 32 of the government shutdown, people across the nation and even right here on the eastern shore are feeling the effects. That’s why communities across Delmarva are doing everything they can to help those in need during the shutdown.
Currently, officials with the American Legion post 17 in Lewes are collecting donations to support the coast guard in the area who are working without pay.
Residents in the area say they’re happy to give to the cause, and add that it’s so important for everyone to help their fellow neighbors.
“I think it’s great because there’s so many people who are out of work right now,” said resident Betty Ann Thornton.
“Oh we unite, we unite, and that goes to show that any disaster that we have or whatever Americans unite and that’s the only thing that keeps us going,” said resident Stefanie Salvatore.
Officials add that you can call the legion at 302-645-1751 to learn about the different ways that you can make a donation.
