January officially recognized as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Del.

DOVER, Del. – On Wednesday, Governor John Carney signed a proclamation, recognizing the month of January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Just recently, in a two day human trafficking operation, 40 people were arrested for prostitution related offenses which just goes to show how prevalent human trafficking is in Delaware.

Lawmakers are hoping that by raising awareness about the issue, more people will feel comfortable to come forward if they see anything suspicious.

Dr. Kara Odom Walker, the Secretary of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services said, “So having a month to identify it allows us to talk about it to de-stigmatize the concerns that if you are out at the grocery store you see someone on the corner you see someone in some other location you should be willing to say something and speak up.”

Lawmakers are hoping to continue the conversation about human trafficking moving forward even after the month is over.
