Fire department urges people to stay off the ice
SALISBURY, Md. – As those temps continue to plummet, the Salisbury Fire Department is urging people to protect themselves from the dangers of playing on ice.
47 ABC is told below freezing temps can cause small ponds and waterways to form a thin sheet of ice.
But because temps won’t usually stay that way for long, that sheet of ice is too thin to handle the weight of a person, let alone small child, or even your pet.
If children or your pets walk on weak spots they can fall in causing hypothermia or even heart attack among serious health problems.
Fire Department Assistant Chief Rob Frampton has a message for those who want to brave those icy spots.
He said, “Ice doesn’t always freeze evenly. There can be some weak spots in it. Stay off the ice. The temps never get near cold enough to where it’s totally safe.”
