Fire and Ice Festival returns to Bethany Beach

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – “They’re going to expect their minds to be blown!”

While summer may be months away, that isn’t stopping people in Bethany Beach from soaking up the sun or hitting the boards, even in icy temps.

The Fire and Ice Festival put on by the Bethany Beach chamber of commerce is back for the second year in a row.
We caught up with event coordinators who tell us there’s plenty going on this weekend for families.

Event organizer Lauren Weaver said, “There’s something for everybody with the Fisher’s Popcorn or Ropewalk, happy hours at the hotel, beautiful beach views, and all these photo ops.”

The main event is the ice sculptures.

All around town and on the boardwalk you’ll see different and unique ice works of art at businesses.

Another organizer Katina Dawson said, “I can’t even begin to describe these amazing ice sculptures that these super talented sculptors have created from ice lab.”

One of the sculptors, Kane Rose, says these works of art only last for a little while that’s why you got to head down to the beach before they’re gone.

Rose said, “The thing about ice is, its always temporary so you can spend like hours and hours putting in this work and then within a few hours or a day it melts and crashes and becomes just water again.”

Aside from the ice work, this weekend is a great opportunity to hit some of your favorite stores.

Weaver said, “We have so many businesses involved. Its a nice little push. It gives everybody the taste of the beach at the end of January.”

On top of shopping, they’ve got a family ice rink.

Dawson said, “100 percent of the proceeds for that go to believe in tomorrow children’s foundation.”>

But if ice skating or braving the cold temps isn’t your thing Weaver says, “There’s a nice warm spot at Mango’s. For 27 years the Beta Sigma Phi Aplha Alpha sorority has a dance.”

If you do make your way to the beach this weekend, Rose says, “if you’re coming down wear layers and hand warmers.”
