Del. legislators tackle early voting during 2019 session
DOVER, Del. – During Governor John Carney’s State of the State address Thursday, he highlighted a need for Delawareans to have better access to voting.
And he made it a point to say that the First State needs to make it easier and more convenient for people to vote. Ideas include same day registration and early voting.
It’s a move that’s already being discussed within the General Assembly with two new bills being introduced just yesterday calling for those exact changes.
But politicians we spoke to Thursday, believe it or not, aren’t all to thrilled about the idea.
“Well I think the issue of the registration, I’ve been to the polls I used to work the polls. I think early registration or same day registration creates a problem for those people. They’re volunteers who get paid a very minimal amount and to actually do that is one thing to say they’re going to do it is something entirely different,” explains Rep. Daniel Short.
Governor Carney added that he would like to sign legislation into law allowing early voting, and same day registration during this session.
