Crisfield turns into winter wonderland due to flash freeze
CRISFIELD, Md. – On Monday morning, some streets in Crisfield looked like ice skating rinks, and some benches looked like beautiful ice sculptures. This was all caused by Sunday night’s flash freeze.
While some told 47ABC on Monday that they’re ready for all this ice to melt, others told us they’re just excited to soak up the beauty of the winter wonderland.
Lion Gardner, a visitor from Rehoboth Beach said, “This is a first. I’ve never seen ice do that before!”
On Sunday, Crisfield was hit with rain, an abnormally high tide, heavy winds and subsequently a flash freeze, presenting icy conditions on Monday.
Gardner said, “The water up against the bulk head, it’s like a giant slushie, it’s kind of crazy.”
Although mother nature created a spectacular display by the waters edge, it wasn’t so pretty further inland where icy roads caused closures in several neighborhoods.
Pyeth Cottman, a Crisfield local said, “We cant travel too good here on this ice. Not at all, you’ve got to be very careful on ice…I had a hard time getting home last night trying to find what path I could get through.”
Despite the dangers, many still took to the roads on Monday, slipping and sliding their way to work.
Moving forward, we’re told many of the people living in Crisfield just hope the city will find a way to prevent flooding in the future so they don’t have to deal with iced over roads anymore.
Cottman said, “Hoping for things like this, that we’ll have better drainage on this street here and it’s the other streets that need new drains. Other than that, that’s about the best thing we can ask for right now.”
We reached out to the Crisfield Mayor on Monday for a comment, he said even although a few roads had to be closed off, all in all the city made out pretty well.
If you plan on going out to see the winter wonderland by the water front in Crisfield on Monday night or Tuesday, just make sure you layer up.
