Wicomico County Council accepts federal grant to develop Pirate’s Wharf
SALISBURY, Md. – Through a federal grant, a new park in Wicomico County will now be added to the list of places that you can go on an adventure.
The Wicomico County Council has officially voted to accept an $820,000 award from the National Park Service through the Land and Water Conservation Fund to develop Pirate’s Wharf.
Pirate’s Wharf is a 300-acre park off of Whitehaven road. Recreation Parks and Tourism plans to create a public access for the park. They want to add a boat ramp, a pavilion, and even a trail system.
Their director, Steve Miller, tells 47 ABC that this is an opportunity for families to go outside. “We hope it can draw visitors here, folks that would want to travel to see the river or bird watching or historical assets there. We are very hopeful and very excited for the citizens of the county to have a facility that’s been in the county’s inventory for 20 something years and they haven’t had access to and be able to open that,” Miller says.
This approved grant has a matching grant and with this money they should be able to do the entire project.
Currently, they are starting a masterplan process and anticipate being done by June. After that, there will be a permitting process but they hope to have Pirate’s Wharf open in three years.
