‘Swamp cancer’ claims life of another Chincoteague pony

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company is reporting that another pony has been lost to ‘swamp cancer’.

According to the department’s Facebook page, Lyra, the mare that battled the sickness the longest, had to be laid down on Sunday.

They say the treatments appear to work for a little while, but the fungus seems to come back in full force. They are waiting to receive a new drug, which they plan to use on the four remaining ponies. They also noted that they are going to do everything possible to continue to help the sick ponies.

However, the Facebook post isn’t all bad news: it also mentions that the buybacks and late born foals are “looking good and feeling frisky”.
