Study: “Cultural engagement” prevents depression in older adults

December 20, 2018
Justina Coronel,

SALISBURY, Md. – With the holiday season here, many people will be spending time with their loved ones. But a new study says that you should pay even more attention to the older adults in your family.

Researchers say that taking trips outside the home can help prevent depression. University College London recently found that taking regular trips to experience “cultural engagement” is actually a key way for adults over 50 years old to prevent depression.

Because local matters, 47 ABC spoke to the MAC Center in Salisbury about this study. They say a great way to get your loved one involved and active is by asking them what they would like to do

“Target it to their interest. If your grandmother doesn’t like bowling, taking her bowling won’t be any fun for her,” says Larry Robinson, with MAC Inc. “Don’t force them to do something they don’t want to do. But get them involved. Get them active. Ask them what they would like to do.”

Whether it’s a neighbor or a family member, Robinson says that you should try and spend time with anyone who might be alone on the holidays.

The Mac Center says if you can’t be with your loved one this holiday season, a great way to get them engaged is through technology. You can either Facetime them or call them so they don’t feel isolated. The MAC Center will be hosting a class to teach older adults how to use technology like iPads. You can find more information about their classes here online or by calling 410-742-0505.
