Single vehicle crash in Northampton Co. leaves one dead, four others injured

CAPE CHARLES, Va. – Virginia State Police say a teenager is dead and four others are injured following an early morning crash on Christmas Eve.

According to police, the accident happened at around 2:45 AM, in the 23000 block of Lankford Highway, south of Route 642, in Cape Charles.

Through further investigation, police learned that a 2003 Saturn VUE was traveling northbound on Lankford Highway when it ran off the roadway, overturned, and hit several trees. A 17-year-old passenger, later identified as Trevonne Avant Stith, was pronounced dead on scene.

Three other juveniles and an adult passenger were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The juveniles were able to escape the vehicle and ran to a nearby residence to get help. All three were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injures.

The adult passenger, identified as Tracy Shavonn Stith, mother of Trevonne Stith, was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, 40-year-old Calvin E. Berryhill Jr., of Exmore, was charged with driving under the influence, manslaughter, and misdemeanor endangerment/neglect.
