Seaford PD: Scammer claims to be General Manager of the city with recent phone scam

SEAFORD, Del. – Seaford police are warning residents about a phone scam where the caller claims to be the General Manager of the city.

During the call, the man allegedly demands money and threatens to shut your electric and water off in 10 minutes if you don’t pay. We’re told the man also has a Dominican Republic address that he requests the money to be sent to.

Seaford Police say scams tend to pick up over the holiday season and you should not give money or personal information over the phone.

Senior Corporal Eric Chambers says, “The city of Seaford does not call their customers to make payments on bills, they don’t accept money overt the telephone. They will send you a notice over the mail if there’s an issue with your services, in which you have to come to City Hall and pay for it.”

So far one person has reportedly fallen victim to the scam paying over $1,000 to the caller.

We’re told if you receive the call, they recommend you hang up and block the number. Or you can write the number down and report it to Seaford Police.
