UPDATE: Pedestrian-involved crash in Bethany Beach turns fatal, victim identified
BETHANY BEACH, Del. – Delaware State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that happened Wednesday evening.
Police say that shortly before 5:30 PM, a 2016 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway, approaching the intersection of Hickman Plaza Drive. The driver of the truck did not see a pedestrian crossing within the unlit and unregulated crosswalk, and struck the pedestrian as a result.
Officials say the pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old David W. Henderson of Ithaca, NY, was wearing dark clothing and not carrying a light. Just ahead of him was his wife, who was reportedly holding a small key chain type flashlight. She was not hit.
Henderson was taken to Beebe Medical Center, but was transferred to Christiana Hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. Officials say he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old male from Ocean View, DE, was not injured in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
