Operation Teddy Bear kicks off holiday season for Holly Center

SALISBURY, Md. –  Driving through Salisbury Saturday morning, you may have seen a Perdue truck or two all dressed up for the holiday season.

It’s all part of Operation Teddy Bear, which takes place on the first Saturday every December.

Santa takes a pass on the Reindeer, and instead brings in his convoy of Perdue big rigs, taking residents of the Holly Center on a ride through the Salisbury Bypass.

The event serves as a kickoff to the holiday season for the residents and staff at the Holly Center.

We spoke with one man, who has driven in the event for 22 years and participated in one way or another for all 35 years, about what it means for not only the residents, but the drivers, as well.

“It’s such an honor to see the expression on face when they get in the truck and you take off, they’re entirely different people. They have a smile on their face, they’re enjoying themselves and it makes us enjoy ourselves,” said George Coffin, an event volunteer.

The event also serves as a great opportunity to volunteer, with about 150 folks donating their time.
