Local organization gives back; gives homeless fresh haircuts for 2019

GEORGETOWN, Del. – To ring in 2019, the Shepherd’s Place made sure people in need were able to start the year off right, by offering free haircuts.

“You feel so much better when you have a fresh haircut,” says Organizer Jim Martin.

With a fresh chop and a hot meal free of charge, organizer Jim Martin and his team hope their hospitality opens new doors for their clients.

Martin said, “We wanted the homeless community around us to feel welcome and feel like 2019 is a new beginning.”

Fully equipped with trimmers and clippers, Shiwuan “Skyes Da Barber” makes sure his clientele look sharp.

Sykes said, “Some people aren’t as fortunate enough to come into the barber shop and pay the $20 or $30 to get a haircut depending on their financial situation. So why not give back to the people that need it?”

Sykes tells 47 ABC that he wants his clients to look sharp for job interviews so they can land that job.

47 ABC spoke to one of his clients, war veteran Anthony Moyer, who says his beard trim will keep him looking fresh in the New Year.

Moyer said, “Eric and Jim, they put me to work.”

Moyer tells 47 ABC aside from his fresh trim, the Shepherd’s Office has helped him get back on his feet and help those in need.

Moyer said, “Its helps us out a lot. Especially because we live in the woods. It’s a place to come warm ourselves up. We help out around here and it just keeps us busy.”

Organizers also tell 47 ABC that after people got their hair cut, Georgetown Presbyterian Church invited those in need of a warm bed and midnight snack to come stay and have a place to rest their head.

The cost: nothing.

47 ABC caught up with one visitor who says she’s been staying at the church and hopes other people in need will do the same.

Sue Gomez said, “If you’re homeless and living on the street, you’re more than welcome to come down to the church. At 1 a.m. they let us all in. You have a cot, pillows, blankets.”
