Georgetown Police warning of phone scam

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Georgetown Police are investigating reports of attempted fraud, and they are warning residents.

Police say they first learned of the issue from a resident on December 19th, claiming they had received several calls from people identifying themselves as local government officials. The resident told police that the first called claimed to be a Georgetown Police Officer and told the victim that they had an active warrant and if that payment wasn’t received immediately, the victim would be arrested. The resident then received a phone call from a female claiming to be a lawyer with “US Legal Support”, stating that she would handle the payment transaction.

To attempt to validate themselves, the initial caller cloned Georgetown Police Department’s Phone number, which is 302-856-6613.

Georgetown Police want to remind everyone that any request for payment made by someone claiming to be a police officer is fraudulent.
