Fruitland Police investigating phone scam spoofing department’s number
FRUITLAND, Md. – Police are warning the public of a phone scam that is using the Fruitland Police Department’s name to try and fool people into giving up money, or commit fraud.
The department says they have been receiving calls from folks from as far away as California, saying they were returning calls made by the department.
The number provided to those people was for the department, but it was not the main line. Instead, we’re told the scammer was using a spoof, or a cloned line.
Those that answered say they were asked to commit Medicare fraud and purchase back and neck braces.
The case is still under investigation.
