Flu season in full swing, tips to stay healthy this winter season

SALISBURY, MD. – This December, doctors across the United States say the flu virus has started to spread at a dangerous rate. According to the study, states like Virginia have been hit with about 50 reports of a widespread infection. Doctors say that’s a major concern for Delmarva.

“So because of the way people travel and particularly with the holidays folks are now crossing state lines, day in and day out. So a flu that may be not as widespread here, at this particular point, two weeks from now three weeks from now it can be completely be widespread in our area,” said Terry Emmerich, Medical Director at PRMC.

Doctors tell 47 ABC that there are different ways to prevent yourself from getting flu and other infections. For example, you should clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water, drink plenty of fluids and get a flu shop.

The doctor adds even if you already received a flu shot, there’s still a chance to catch the virus later on.

“The number of people that have severe illnesses from the flu can measure in the tens of thousands per year, even just in the United States. So you can have people die by the thousands just because they have not received their flu vaccine. So it’s very important even at this late stage in the game to go out and get your vaccine.”
