Dover church fire under investigation

DOVER, Del. – The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is working to investigate an early morning fire that destroyed a Dover church.

We’re told that shortly before 1 AM, the Cheswold Fire Company, along with the assistance of other area fire companies, responded to the blaze at the Little Union Church, located in the 5000 block of West Denney’s Road.

Three firefighters were injured while treating the blaze and were treated at Kent General Hospital in Dover, where they were listed in good condition. No other injuries were reported.

Cheswold Fire Chief, Josh Dempsey said, “More or less, the injuries were more or less bumps and bruises, soreness, so they were treated and released within two hours of getting to the hospital and I don’t think there is any limitations to their duties now.” He continued to say, “Couple steps one way or another, and it could have been a much worse scenario.”

State fire investigators as well as federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are currently working to determine the fire’s origin and cause. Heavy fire damage has been estimated at $100,000.
