Woodbridge football captures second state title in three years

NEWARK, Del.- The Woodbridge Blue Raiders are once again Delaware Division II State Champions.

Woodbridge trekked into Delaware Stadium Saturday night for a showdown with Wilmington Friends.

The Quakers and Blue Raiders meeting for the second time this season, with Wilmington Friends handing Woodbridge their second loss of the year back in late September.

Tonight however belonged to the Blue Raiders. On the first play from scrimmage, Richard Massey took the handoff from Troy Haynes and sprinted into the end zone from 51 yards out.

Now if that play was any indication of how the rest of the night would go, it would be all smiles for those donning the blue and silver.

Tajhon Hammond would get the ball rolling on defense, coming up with a 75-yard interception return touchdown at the end of the first quarter.

Then in the second, Haynes found the corner pylon from 13 yards out to give Woodbridge the 20-3 lead at the half.

In the second half it was more Blue Raiders. Gabe Wescott had two interceptions in the fourth quarter, his second good for a 50-yard pick-six to put Woodbridge ahead 26-3.

All that scoring would prove to be enough. Woodbridge captures their second state title in three seasons 33-9 over Wilmington Friends.

The Blue Raiders wrap up their season with an 11-2 record.
