Volunteers help keep Assateague Island beaches clean

WEST OCEAN CITY, Md. – While some people were probably still asleep, volunteers from the community gathered in West Ocean City to go out and help clean up some trash at Assateague Island.

According to the event organizer, Billy Weiland plastic bags, straws and even styrofoam are slowly taking over the north point of Assateague Island.

Weiland said the clean up is supported by the non-profit organization Assateague Coastal Trust and that he hopes these environmental efforts will help bring some attention to help keep the island clean.

“One of the things that I start off with these beach clean ups is letting people know that we’re out there to clean up the beach for an hour or two and using these events to raise awareness to the problem of single-use plastics and how they are affecting our marine environment,” said Weiland.

Weiland also said some of these environmental problems have already been talked about at Ocean City Green Team meetings.
