Traffic violations causing safety concerns at Sussex Co. daycare
HARBESON, Del. – Daycare teachers at Lullaby Learning Center are fed up with drivers speeding past their school.
Sheri Gebbia, the daycare owner said, “This is a safety issue that we have no control over.”
Feeling helpless, daycare workers and parents alike feel like they’re at the end of their rope with drivers breaking the law, causing a serious safety threat.
Jesica Dempster, a parent said, “These cars are flying up the shoulder. I understand you’re in a hurry they want to get to that light, but you’re putting children’s lives in danger.”
Charles “C.R.” McLeod, spokesman for the Delaware Department of Transportation said, “In that area it is not legal for cars to pass onto the shoulder.”
Gebbia said, “Its a huge concern that nothing is going to get done until somebody get seriously injured or killed.”
Recently, Jesica shared with us that she and her three year-old daughter witnessed a serious accident involving a car speeding up the shoulder and barreling into another SUV entering the daycare lot, with mom and baby on board.
Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Dempster said, “A mother was pulling into the daycare and a car was riding the shoulder, which is what they do everyday, and they struck the car. What if that was a smaller car? That baby might not be here.”
Gebbia and Dempster tell 47 ABC they’ve reached out to multiple state departments and haven’t had any luck.
Dempster said, “Its really frustrating. I’ve got two kids that come here. I go in and out of this parking lot all the time.”
Gebbia said, “We’ve tried many different things like putting a cone out there or putting a jeep out there, even our own personal car.”
All that just to block drivers from blowing past the entrance. We spoke with DELDOT to find out how they’re addressing this issue.
McLeod said, “Our traffic safety team is going to be taking a look at the area to see if there’s any improvements we can help make to avoid any potential crashes.”
