Thousands raised to benefit local animals

WEST OCEAN CITY, Md. – It was a big night for the Worcester County Humane Society, as they held their annual Paws and Whiskers fundraiser dinner in West Ocean City.

The 38th annual fundraiser dinner was held, and we’re told this is one of the two biggest fundraising events for the organization.

Hundreds of people came out to the Madfish Bar and Grill for a night of food and drinks and auctions, that results in about $10,000 raised a year for the shelter.

The non-profit, no-kill shelter depends on donations and fundraising events like these to pay for care of their animals.

Those costs can can average $1,900 an animal, including food, vet bills and care.

This fundraiser comes just weeks ahead of the ribbon cutting for the shelter’s new low-cost spay and neuter clinic in West Ocean City.

“Within the next month, or so, we will be opening our new low-cost spay and neuter clinic, make it an affordable option for people locally.  We have it up and running currently, but we are trying to catch up with our backlog of about, somewhere around 200 kittens that we take in every year,” said board member Heather Bahrami.

The shelter is currently in need of food, cat litter, as well as towels and blankets for the winter, every donation makes a difference.
