Sussex Central advances to D-I state title game behind second half comeback
Sussex Central vs. Dover
DOVER, Del. – The Sussex Central Golden Knights are heading to the Division I state title game after completing an improbable second half comeback Friday night against Dover.
On the Senator’s first drive of the game, Jordan Magee hit Javon Peace with a screen pass good for a 69-yard touchdown. Dover would proceed to go up 20-8 at the halftime break, with Sussex Central generating little to no offense through the first two quarters.
The second half brought us a different storyline. The Golden Knights defense held Dover to limited offensive yards while the Sussex Central offense dominated time of possession.
Following a Domonique Smith 2-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter, Sussex Central would trail 20-15.
With just 31.7 seconds left on the game clock, Isaac Barnes connected with Smith through the air, 14 yards for the go ahead touchdown.
A final hail marry attempt by Magee would sail out of bounds and the Sussex Central Golden Knights completed the comeback, shutting out Dover in the second half and advancing to next week’s state title game.
Sussex Central will meet Salesianum for the Delaware Division I championship. Game time is scheduled for 1:00p.m. at the University of Delaware.
