SU receives Marks of Distinction for reduction of carbon footprint

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University has recently been recognized for their efforts in reducing their carbon footprint on campus.

Back in 2007, SU signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, pledging to reach a goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050. The University was just one of over 400 institutions that signed the agreement.

According to Second Nature, the network that oversees the agreement, the University has made significant progress towards that goal over the last decade.

SU recently placed in the top 5 percent, earning them the organization’s ‘Marks of Distinction’ for being on track to reduce carbon footprint by 50 percent and continuing to source at least 50 percent of its electricity from renewable energy.

In fall 2017, SU installed a solar parking canopy, which generates enough electricity annually to power three residence halls. We’re told the University is also home to 11 U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings, and is also home to the Eastern Shore’s first LEED-certified new construction project for Conway Hall, built in 2008.
