Staying safe while running in the cold
SALISBURY, Md. – Many are gearing up for some chilly weather here on Delmarva, which isn’t too ideal for those of you that will be participating in Turkey Trots across Delmarva these next couple days.
And whether your actually running in these races or just sideline cheering on loved ones its important to dress the right way to stay safe.
We’re told layering up is key for both, but for runners wearing shirts that you don’t mind throwing out is always a good idea because as your body heats up you may get too hot to keep all those layers on.
The biggest thing is to protect your skin.
“You lose a lot of heat through your head so you want to cover your head. As far as your limbs, your fingers, your toes you want to make sure you’re wearing a comfortable shoe not too constrictive because if you cut the blood off you have an increased risk of getting frost bite,” explains Your Docs In owner Dr. Walter Gianelle.
You definitely want to make sure you stretch before you run as well because if you don’t you could suffer a muscle strain. But again most importantly just layer up from head to toe and stay warm.
