Salisbury University men’s basketball stuns Maryland Eastern Shore in preseason exhibition
It’s something you don’t hear very often, but the Salisbury University men’s basketball team did it.
In the Ten Mile Tip Off on Thursday night, the DIII Gulls stunned DI Maryland Eastern Shore 67-60. In a battle of interim coaches, Cliff Reed for The Shore and Brian McDermott for Salisbury, the Sea Gulls overcame an early deficit to go up by as many as 16, and hang on for the win.
Three point shooting and rebounding were surely the difference in this one. The Gulls outshot UMES 13-33 (39%) to 2-16 (13.5%) from 3-point land, while also out-rebounding a much bigger team 37-32.
Stephen Decatur grad Gary Briddell was on the man in the spotlight, dropping 19 points in front of friends and family. Johnny Fierstein added a near triple-double, 8 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists, and Mike Ward finished with 13 points.
For UMES, AJ Cheeseman finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Tyler Jones with 15, and Bryan Urrutia with 11 and 6 assists.
Salisbury opens up their regular season on November 10th at home against Arcadia, and for Maryland Eastern Shore, it doesn’t get any easier for them; they’re headed to Georgetown on Tuesday, November 6th.
