Salisbury defeats Christopher Newport to capture the CAC title
SALISBURY, MD- In a rematch of last seasons Capital Athletic Conference championship, the Salisbury University Seagulls hosted CNU tonight to determine who should be named the CAC’s best. Salisbury trying to avenge their double OT loss last season while the Captains looked to make it two titles in a row.
SU came out firing, with eight shots on goal including one which drew a penalty stroke for Jillian Hughes and she snuck it past the keeper for the first goal of the game with 17 minutes into the first half. Captains looking to stay in this one, three minutes later Bailey Miller gets it in front of the goal and taps it in for the equalizer.
With 4 minutes left in the first half, Gulls looking to retake the lead and it was Rachael Domanico getting the pass from Lexi Butler in the circle and knocks it in for the goal, her third of the season, to put Su up 2-1 at half. In the first half, the gulls out shot the Captains 8-5 while matching their total fouls at 3.
In the second half, it was more dominance by the Gulls. Trying to ice the game, Salisbury would get an insurance goal from Rebecca Lloyd just six minutes into the second half and the Gulls would hold on to take the CAC championship 3-1 over CNU
With the win, Salisbury punches their ticket into the NCAA tournament and will play their first game of the tournament November 7th. Christopher Newport will need some help to advance to the NCAA tournament. The round one schedule will be announced this Sunday night.
