Project READ helps dozens of residents find jobs, learn basic literacy skills

SALISBURY, Md. –  Project READ was front and center at the Wicomico Civic Center honoring its volunteer tutors and the adult learners who have found personal success through the program.

Over the past two years, Project READ has helped those in the area with reading, writing, math and basic computer skills, at any level.

The free program, which has resulted in 45 people finding jobs, offers tutoring to adult learners in reading, writing, math, computer skills and more.

The program also helps those who need the qualifications to enter the work force or even the military.

“They were able to hone those skills, critical thinking skills they need, to understand what they’re reading and go on and take the SAT test, the military entrance exam and other assessment tests,” said coordinator Wynnette Curtis.

Moving forward, coordinators tell us they may look into providing this service to veterans and incarcerated individuals who have been recently released.

Project READ is always looking for volunteers.  If you can give an hour or more of your time a week you can give Wicomico County Public Libraries a call and donate your time.
