Police: Child mauled by stolen dog, Del. man arrested
FREDERICA, Del. – Delaware State Police say a man, who stole a dog, was arrested on Sunday after the dog attacked a 4-year old boy.
Officials reportedly responded to the 100 block of Fifth Street in Frederica, at 12:36 PM, for reports of a dog attack. Investigators discovered that Roger Scarborough stole a Pit Bull dog from a yard on Jackson Street.
The 62-year old reportedly used a bungee cord as a leash and ran away with the dog to Fifth Street, where a child was riding his bike near his home. Police say that’s when the dog “viciously” attacked the boy. The child’s mother and a friend were able to free the child from the dog, but they were injured in the process.
The 4-year old boy was brought to the Kent General Hospital where it was determined that he had a lacerations to his right shoulder, face, back of his neck and scalp. He was then brought to the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children where he is currently listed in stable condition.
The 39-year old mother, of Frederica, was also brought to the Kent General Hospital. She was treated for two open fractures to her left hand, along with a puncture wound to her right leg.
The 35-year old friend, of Frederica, was also taken to the Kent General Hospital where he was treated for several lacerations to his right hand.
Scarborough, of Frederica, was taken into custody by responding troopers and transported to Troop 3, Camden, Delaware. He was charged with reckless endangerment 1st degree, creates a substantial risk of death to another, two counts of reckless endangering 2nd degree, criminal trespass 3rd degree and theft.
The Pit Bull was turned over to the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare to be quarantined and the owner has to provide proof the dog was vaccinated against rabies. This incident remains under investigation.
