Operation We Care event returns to benefit troops and local first responders

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. – Over two hundred volunteers, along with state officials and first-responders got together on Sunday to help prepare supplies for troops stationed around the world.

According to Program Coordinator Diana Merritt, the annual event Operation We Care is a chance for community members to work hand-in-hand to help pack hundreds of boxes filled with items like baby wipes, deodorants and even popcorn from the beloved Fisher’s Popcorn.

Merritt said the event is a chance to recognize the men and women who serve our country, as well as to our local first-responders.

“When we started, we were looking for some way to recognize our troops and send a morale boost,” said Merritt.

“We started off small and as the community got involved we’ve grown and today we anticipate packing 850 care packages,” said Merritt.

According to Operation We Care volunteers, more than 1,000 boxes were packaged on Sunday morning and are ready to be delivered.
