New playground at Greenwood Elementary after original facility destroyed by arson

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – It’s an exciting time for Somerset County Public Schools.

Students at Greenwood Elementary finally have access to their brand new playground. Back in July, the playground was completely destroyed by arson. But now, it’s up and running in just four months.

We’re told a playground takes up to eight months to build but Greenwood Elementary made it a priority to have it ready as soon as possible.

Their principal, Ashley Walters, says they can’t comment on the arson incident since it’s an ongoing investigation, but they are excited to have the space available once again. “Being in a classroom all day can be stressful and overwhelming, so this is their outlet they look forward to every day. Without that time, it’s hard to focus and concentrate in class, so having this to look forward to it’s a great motivator and incentive for our students,” Walters tells 47 ABC.

We’re told the new playground is bigger and better. But their plans aren’t stopping there. They also have plans for a phase two, where they will add on more options for handicap and disabled students.
