Fruitland Community Center educates children about healthy eating habits

FRUITLAND, Md. – On Thursday community leaders and youth came together for an important cause, nutrition.

As a part of their goal to engage the community bringing youth and adults together to keep youth off the streets, the Fruitland Community Culture of Health Initiative hosted a special educational session tonight highlighting the importance of eating healthy and making healthy choices to prevent obesity in the community.

Children were taught the importance of having a well-proportioned My Plate and were taught how to portion out healthy servings for meals throughout the day.

Virginie Zoumenou, professor of nutrition at University of Maryland Eastern Shore said, “We want the youth to understand that whatever they have on their plates is important because whatever you eat will effect your health.”

The Fruitland Community Center will have a few other youth-related events coming up throughout the month and Thursday’s program was sponsored by UMES’S Expanded Food Nutrition and Education Program.
