Foods your pet should stay away from this Thanksgiving
GEORGETOWN, Del. – We’re in the home stretch now as we’re just two days away from Thanksgiving, and as you get ready to stuff your stomachs this holiday you may want to keep an eye out on what your pets are eating as well. Animal shelters all across Delmarva are sharing tips with pet owners about what not to feed your animals this Thanksgiving. They say holiday food should be kept from your pets at all times. They add that fatty foods are hard for animals to digest, chicken bones can damage your pet’s digestive tract, and holiday sweets can contain ingredients that are poisonous to pets. Items you should refrain from giving them include raisins, bread dough, turkey and chocolate.
“I think everybody looks at their dogs as part of the family and may want them to participate in activities that the rest of the family are but it’s not good for them. And any abrupt extreme change in their diet can cause extreme intestinal issues as it is,” said shelter manager for the Brandywine Valley SPCA, Chris Farrell.
Officials add that if your animal does get a hold of these certain types of food and is throwing up, is breathing heavily or seems lethargic, you should contact your local veterinarian or animal hospital as soon as possible.
