Delaware Latino Voters Encouraged to Vote With Be Our Voice Campaign
LEWES, Del. – People across Delaware are making their voices heard this midterm, including Latinos.
That is because the Delaware Hispanic Commission and the League of Women Voters of Delaware have created the Be Our Voice campaign to encourage Latinos to vote.
“Be Our Voice consists of members of the community who cannot vote reaching out to those who can vote to take them to the polls and have their voice heard, so they can become their voice,” said the Co-Chairwoman of the Delaware Hispanic Commission, Charito Calvachi-Mateyko.
“Be our voice is a wake-up call,” said Carlos Rodríguez, a local resident.
“Without this campaign, we’d be too asleep,” said Rodríguez.
Calvachi-Mateyko said even though undocumented immigrants cannot vote, the campaign allows them to share their concerns with their friends and family who can vote.
“When members of the community reach out to those that can vote and talk about the issues they care about, and they take them to the polls then political candidates benefit to know what they care about,” said Calvachi-Mateyko.
To help, dozens of Latinos in the community are being connected online to let each other know where they can vote and if they need any help to make it to the polls.
“Knocking in people’s doors and creating connections,” said Calvachi-Mateyko.
“Sometimes we text them because when they meet us in festivals they give us their phone numbers, so we text them to remind them that it’s time to vote,” said Calvachi-Mateyko.
“You can tell them, ‘Be my voice because I don’t have a voice in this democracy’,” she said.
