Wico. County ballot questions explained
Wicomico County, Md. – “It’s important to have public input,” said Wicomico County Council President John T. Cannon.
When you head to the polls November 6th it’s not just the candidates you have to decide on.
The county will also be asking voters their thoughts on two charter amendments.
The first question, Question A: will ask you, the voter, if you are for or against the council approving the county executive’s selection of the Director of Administration and the Assistant Director of Administration and deputy director within six months of the election.
Cannon said, “The county council feels its very necessary for them in appointing deputy director.”
Council members 47 ABC spoke with say this approval process is important because it removes the chance for corruption.
The next question on the ballot, Question B: will ask you if you are for or against the council having the ability to approve any transfer of appropriation between departments, or in lighter terms, moving of money or assets between departments.
Cannon also said, “Any capital asset that’s going to be transferred between departments of $15,000 or more, the council should have the authority to approve that.”
When $15,000 of taxpayer money is being moved between public departments, the county wants to act as the middle man since they’re the ones who budgeted this funding originally.
Its just another way for the county to safeguard your hard earned money.
As of now, departments like public works can transfer large assets, like cars or equipment, to other departments without prior notification.
Cannon also said, “When you’re spending taxpayer dollars you want to make sure its done as efficiently as possible. It allows the council to create checks and balances, and the other is thing is it comes to the public. So the public understands exactly what’s happening with their dollars.”
