Sussex County: Officials looking for final comments for Comprehensive Plan

GEORGETOWN, Del. – “It’s a much better plan than we’ve seen in past years, the devil in the details is implementation,” said Sussex Alliance for Responsible Growth (SARG) group member Jeffery Stone.

The clock is ticking for residents in Sussex County to share their concerns and ideas with county officials as they prepare to send in their final draft for the county’s 2018 Comprehensive Plan.

“Sussex county over the years has always done a comprehensive plan it’s always had great goals and objectives, implementation has always been the issue,” said Stone.

For the last two years officials have been working on creating a plan that would help the development and growth of the county for the next ten years. Including creating strategies that officials say would help better manage the growing population and transportation issues in the area.

“We have traffic issues and so forth but I guess we can do a controlled growth but not too fast,” said Sussex County resident Joel Hitchcock.

“One of the ideas of transportation was the creation of a committee whereby we worked directly with DelDot to know what’s going on in the county to a better degree, and coordinate better with the county as it relates to our land use and their road improvements,” said Sussex County Administrator Todd Lawson.

So far, residents say they’ve have been taking every opportunity to let officials know what matters the most to them, and what they envision for the future of Sussex County.

“Protecting the environment, trying to solve and attempting to solve future traffic congestion like we’ve seen and better land use,” said Stone.

And county officials say residents can be assured that they’ll be able to get the job done.

“For people that are familiar with the county and our activities, yeah I think you’re seeing a change, I think you’re seeing a little bit of a direction change from this county council listening to stakeholders,” said Lawson.

If you haven’t had a chance to comment on the Comprehensive Plan, you’ll have one last chance on Tuesday October 23rd at 10 AM in Georgetown. Officials will be holding a public hearing for the community to come out and voice their concerns and ideas. Or you can submit your ideas online here.

County officials say that once the Comprehensive Plan is complete, the council will vote on the plan, and then it will go to the Governor for a signature. They add they hope to start the implementation process by 2019.
