Selbyville Middle School named National Blue Ribbon School

SELBYVILLE, Del. – One Sussex county school has received the title of National Blue Ribbon School.

We’re told Selbyville Middle School (SMS) is the first secondary school within the Indian River School District to receive this honor. It is also the district’s 10th National Blue Ribbon Award since 2001.

Currently in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools program honors both public and private schools in one of two performance categories. Performance is measured by overall student scroes, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates.

SMS was honored in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, meaning they are among the state’s highest performing schools, measured by state assessments or national exams.

The school is one of two Title I public middle schools in the country to receive the aware for Exemplary High Performance. It is also the first Title I public middle school in the state to receive the award, and is only one of 22 middle schools to receive the award in 2018.

The program has reportedly recognized over 8,000 schools since it began.

“To be named a National Blue Ribbon School is a tremendous accomplishment made even more special by Selbyville Middle’s designation as the first secondary school in our district to receive this honor. The hard work and dedication required of students and staff to receive Blue Ribbon recognition is simply remarkable”, stated Indian River School District Superintendent Mark Steele.
