Seaford park vandalized; Police department looking for suspects

SEAFORD, Del. – Seaford city workers are hard at work maintaining Jays Nest Football field. It’s a job that takes about 40 hours a week but this latest task isn’t something on their usual checklist of seeding and fertilizing. Damage has been done at the field; four inches of tire marks run deep ripping the field apart.

Cpl. Eric Chambers, Public Information Officer for Seaford Police Department says, “Sunday morning an employee from the Parks and Rec Department came down to the football fields to prepare it for the flag football game and she discovered damage to the field, which consisted of tire tracks, ruts that were spun donuts on the field.”

$1,000 worth of damage caused several games to re-schedule, as over 150 children use this field for youth co-ed flag football.

“It’s the only field, football field with lights on it. So it accommodates soccer, football, flag football, so it’s very accommodating to the youth. As the days are getting shorter, that field is more important because it does have lights,” City Manager Charles Anderson tells us.

At this point, they can’t confirm if it was an ATV or car. We’re told there would be a trespassing charge and criminal mischief charge.

“I think anytime you see vandalism of a community asset it’s very disappointing, you don’t believe that could happen to your community,” Anderson says.
