Sea Gull Century takes over Tri-County area

SALISBURY, Md. – This weekend marks the 30th annual Sea Gull Century bicycle tour, an event that draws thousands of visitors each year to the eastern shore.

About 5,000 bicyclists come to the area for a 100-mile ride through Assateague, or a 64-mile ride through Princess Anne and Somerset County.

The event, hosted by Salisbury University, acts as a fundraiser for the school and community, as well.

The school donated $35,000 last year to organizations, such as EMS groups, Women Supporting Women, the Boys and Girls Club, and more.

About $80,000 went to 10 new scholarships for local students last year.

“It’s local students, so they’re local families of the Tri-County area.  Their student comes to Salisbury University, and then we in turn, it’s about ten each school year, that we’re able to award scholarships to,” said Amy Waters, the coordinator of Sea Gull Century.

Sea Gull Century marks Wicomico County’s largest one-day tourism event, with it’s annual economic impact on the area at $2.6 Million.
