Residents react to home invasion and shooting at local apartment complex in Dover
DOVER, Del. – “A 3 AM shooting, it’s not uncommon here,” said neighbor Donyale Hall.
Hall was just one of many residents who said they weren’t shocked to hear about a home invasion and shooting that took place right in their own backyards at the Dover Estates Apartments early Tuesday morning.
According to Delaware State Police troopers responded to the scene moments later, only to find a man who says he was shot twice while he was sleeping.
“I think that it’s time that we have some things that come into the community that address the problems here,” said Hall.
Officials say the suspect or suspects involved in the incident immediately fled the scene without taking any property and are still at large.
“People will flee on foot and it’s not uncommon to have teams that are searching through the neighborhood either for guns, shell casings,” said Hall.
Although many were afraid to go on camera in fear for their own lives residents in the area say these incidents are so common they’ve simply become desensitized to it all. But they still take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.
“I carry a concealed and I feel safe and so somebody comes in my yard in the middle the night and runs through and decides to come into my own home I’ve taken measures and steps to protect myself my family my children,” said Hall.
The victim of the shooting, a 26-year-old, who has yet to be identified was taken to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. And while he recovers, residents believe that there’s no time like the present to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.
“Just bringing highlight to it and drawing attention to it helps to reap focus and effort and get some people interested in doing something to a eradicate the problem,” said Hall.
The investigation is still ongoing, if anyone has any information regarding the shooting you’re asked to contact the Delaware State Police at 302-698-8443.
