Overdose Deaths in MD increase, Wicomico County numbers decrease

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – A new report shows that Wicomico County is seeing a decrease in opioid overdose deaths.

The Maryland Department of Health report shows that there is an 11% increase in Maryland. But despite the state seeing an uptick, Wicomico County is seeing a reduction from 19 lives lost to 17.

The Wicomico County Health Department says the variety of resources available is a big reason for the decrease. Naloxone also plays a big role.

Opioid coordinator Christina Bowie-Simpson tells us they are happy to see those results, even though it’s down by just two, “Even a decrease of two lives that’s very significant to us. That is two individuals that are still here. Family members, friends, these are individuals that are in the community that are loved, that reduction in two that is still significant for us here.”

The health department hosts naloxone training every second Tuesday of the month at the Wicomico County Library.

We’re told they hope to see a decrease in overdose deaths, as they continue to battle this problem.
