New historic markers go up in Worcester County
WORCESTER CO., Md. – Officials have put a spotlight on the Eastern Shore’s rich history when it comes to it’s role in the Civil War.
Two new signs went up in Snow Hill and Berlin Monday showcasing the historic sites, like the Worcester County Circuit Courthouse had in the Civil War.
The idea is to connect visitors and residents to the history of the area. In Berlin, their sign tells the unique story of local slave named Isaiah Fassett.
“His story’s just incredible. His owner actually allows him to then join the Union Army, she actually takes pay from the United States government to release him out of bondage. He fights in the US Army for most of the war and when he comes back he settles in Berlin and starts the congregation that is still alive and well there today,” explains Civil War Trails Executive Director Drew Gruber.
These two sites are a part of the Civil War Trails, which include about 15,000 historic sites that spread across six states.
