MILFORD, Del. – The city of Milford will hold Trick or Treating from 6 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday, October 31st, and they have a few safety tips to pass along to those participating.

Citizens are reminded to walk safely, making sure to cross the street at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks. Be sure to look both ways before crossing the street, put electronic devices down and keep your heads up, teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them, always walk on sidewalks or paths, and watch out for cars that are turning or backing up. Remember to teach your children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Drivers are also reminded to drive extra cautiously on Halloween, slowing down and remaining especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Be sure to take extra time to look for children at intersections, on medians, and on curbs.  Drivers should also anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and make sure to enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully.

Participants are encouraged to decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers, and choose light colors if possible. Face paint and makeup are preferred over masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help ensure they can be seen by drivers, and make sure costumes are the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Children under the age of 12 are reminded to always trick or treat with an adult. If children are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should be sure to stick to areas they are familiar with, stay in well-lit areas and be sure to trick or treat in groups.
